Sona Chaandi is an Indian boutique on the corner of Pioneer and 183rd Street which should be thought of a department store, rather than a boutique. In 2014, they will be celebrating their 33rd anniversary.
The name "Sona Chaandi" means "gold, silver". While the store does sell jewelry, it also offers all kinds of fashionable Indian clothing, from sarees to party clothes and lavish wedding outfits as well. Additionally, Sona Chaandi also offers threading, henna, and beautician services as well.
Mala Malani, and her husband Pradeep, started the store in Artesia back in 1980, a year after starting another business in Houston, Texas.
"We started with only six yards of fabric," said Malani. "Now, we have THOUSANDS of yards!"
Her son, Shaan Malanni, is geared to take over the operations of the company. "Business has always been good, said Shaan, "but ever since Slumdog Millionaire business has been booming."
Attached to Sona Chaandi is a popular clothing store for street-wear called Deuce, which Shaan started six years ago.
Sona Chaandi is a popular destination for celebrities. Singer Gwen Stefani and numerous actresses have visited Sona Chaandi on various occasions. Additionally, movie studios often utilize Sona Chaandi's fabrics for their sets. Sona Chaandi has provided fabric for Pirates of the Caribbean; and also for television shows like New Girl.
