Reporting Graffiti Becomes Easier

A member of Artesia’s Public Works Graffiti Team responds to a service request and paints over graffiti.

There’s a graffiti problem going around in Artesia, and the city’s Public Works Department is out on the streets everyday trying to deal with it. However, graffiti isn’t always reported because it isn’t apparent to most citizens on how to get it removed, or perhaps residents are under the assumption that someone else is going to report it. It may seem to be a hassle, but it is actually quite simple. There are two methods, other than removing it by yourself, which will assure the graffiti will be removed in a reasonable amount of time.

First, if the Internet is available, you can submit a service request by logging on to www.cityofartesia.us. On the right side, click your mouse over “Service Request”. The rest is fairly explanatory and you can remain anonymous as well, but please leave an address or location so Public Works can find the spot. If you wish, you can leave your name, e-mail, or phone number so that Public Works can keep you updated as to the status of your request.

If you don’t have a computer, don’t worry, because you can simply call city hall and the receptionist will take the report for you.

The city government prescribes to the “broken window theory”, which states simply that something as simple as a broken window, or in this case graffiti, can eventually lead to a deteriorated neighborhood if the problem is left as is. This is because it is a sign that no one cares. A neighborhood can suffer if nobody gets involved.

If you see graffiti while you’re driving by, or simply enjoying a stroll around the block, please take it upon yourself to report it, and by no means assume someone else will do it, because it’s likely that “somebody else” will have assumed the same thing.

To report graffiti, please log on to www.cityofartesia.us and click on “Service Requests” or call City Hall at (562) 865-6262.
