Universal Waste Prohibited from Disposal at Landfills
The State Dept. of Toxic Substances Control recently made a decision to ban
Universal Waste (U-waste) from disposal at landfills. Effective February 9,
household are no longer allowed to place U-waste such as household batteries,
electronic devices, fluorescent light bulbs, and thermostats containing mecury
in the trash. For a more comprehensive listing, please see the list below
or visit www.888CleanLA.com.
The County of Los Angeles is gearing up to accept the increased amount of U-waste from residents countywide at the weekly Household Hazardous and Electronic Waste (HHW/E-waste) Collection events. For a schedule of the County’s HHW/E-waste events, residents can visit www.888CleanLA.com or call our hotline at (88) CLEAN LA.
U-Waste includes:
Household Batteries
Cell Batteries
Hearing aid batteries
Electronic Devices
TVs and monitors (Flat and CRTs)
Computers (CPU) and laptops
Printers
VCRs
Cell Phones
Telephones and cordless phones

These electronic devices have been tested and are known to be hazardous. Unless you are sure certain electronic devices are not hazardous, you should presume these types of devices need to be recycled or disposed of as hazardous materials and that they may not be thrown in the trash. The rule of thumb is anything with a circuit board or digital may be considered as an electronic device.

Neon bulbs
