Celebrating Mexico’s Independence from Spain
The wonderful smell of fresh Mexican food wafted into the flared nostrils of joyful Mexican Independence Day celebrants at AJ Padelford Park on Sept. 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Coupled with good music, dancing, and performers; this year's event turned out to be great, with an attendance of approximately 450 people.
Jose Martinez, park director for AJ Padelford Park, said "the event was a great success with a large amount of participation form the community."
The event included Mini style carnival games for children 14 years of age and younger, Arts & Crafts (Mini Piñatas), and Loteria. A Mexican Outfit contest was also held for those dressed in traditional Mexican outfits. Cerritos College Adult Education Center and Project “HOPE” representatives attended the event and handed out information regarding services that are available to Artesia residents.
Mexican entrees included authentic carne asada tacos, beef sopes, and freshly cut fruit cocktails. The entertainment was outstanding with Niemes Ballet Folklorico, Matachines Dancers (Indigenous Dancers), and Swing Dancers.
The Mariachi Band took the grand prize as they began to play traditional folk songs and participants enjoyed their talented performance.
