A.J. Park Celebrates Mexico’s Independence from Spain

Mariachi music blared throughout the neighborhood surrounding A.J. Padelford Park.
A.J. Park hosted Artesia’s celebration of Mexican Independence Day, a testimony to when Mexico freed itself from Spanish colonial imperialism. The event started at 11 a.m. on Sept. 17.

Henry Sevilla, relative of a parent group member, came from Mexico to say a few words about Mexican independence, ending his vibrant speech with, “Viva Mexico!” The applause of almost 400 people told Sevilla that his message did not fall on deaf ears.

City manager Maria Dadian, city councilmembers Antonio Mendoza and Sally Flowers, were also in attendance.

Our own Miss Artesia Pageant performed a dance to Selena’s ‘La Carcancha’.

Those attending enjoyed the music of mariachi band Cachanilla de Mexicali, mariachi singer Victor Manuel Villalobos, and Ballet Folklorico “COCO”.

Mexican snacks, tacos, and beverages were served for a pretty good price considering the quality (good quality, low price), and there were plenty of games, music, and dancing to keep busy.

The program was considered very successful by park officials because a large, diverse crowd attended the program.

Mariachi Band "Cachanilla de Mexicali" played good, old fashioned mariachi music and the
Miss Artesia Royal Court Performed a dance routine.
