Artesia Bakery Honored after over 50 Years of Business
Over 200 people honored the Artesia Bakery in May at the Historical Museum, with hints that it will be possibly relocate in the future.
The family owned bakery has been a part of the life of Artesia for many years. The Lakeman family opened the Artesia Bakery in 1952. Four generations of family members have been involved with the business.
At the celebration, a replica of Artesia Bakery's window displayed the original storefront banner, Dutch artifacts and the three tiered display cakes. Refreshments included a variety of the bakery's favorite cookies.
Guests enjoyed Dutch tunes on the piano, and took horse drawn carriage rides through the neighborhood. Wayne Dantema provided film of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands when she visited Artesia in the early 1950's.
Erin Stibal, on behalf of District Supervisor Don Knabe, presented the Lakeman family with a scroll of appreciation and Mayor John P. Lyon gave personal remarks and a resolution from the City of Artesia.
The Disneyland Resort Cast Community Fund awarded the Artesia Historical Society a $1000 grant for their volunteer community service in 2005. Disneyland's Sue Velarde, FAM Project Controller presented the grant. Velarde was the one who placed the Society's name in nomination.
The Artesia Historical Society's upcoming Annual Gala will be held on Saturday, September 30.
The museum is open to the public on the second Saturday of every month from 1 to 3 p.m.
