Celebrating America's Independence

Come and enjoy live music, dancing, games, food, picnicking and an evening fireworks show at the annual Fourth of July Event.

The fireworks show starts at 9 p.m., but starting at 3:30 live music will begin with Christian Simmons' country western music and also the classic rock band BP MAXX (with singer and Artesia resident Tony Martins) will play at the other end of the park at 5:45 p.m.

There will also be a chili cook-off with two awards: a "People's Choice" award and a "Chili Only" (no beans, just chili) award. "Chili Judges" will judge the Chili Only competition and visitors to the park will judge the People's Choice award. To taste and vote on the People's Choice competition, visitors need to pay one dollar and they will be given a spoon, a cup, and a ballot.

Jessica Martinez, Artesia Park's new senior coordinator and designated chili coordinator, is excited about the event. “This is the first time for the city to hold a chili cook-off, and it's going to be a lot of fun,” said Martinez.

The event is open to the public, and all are encouraged to bring their families, friends and/or children.

Personal fireworks are prohibited from the park.

Bingo, volleyball, an over-the-line tournament (played with a 16-inch softball and four-person teams), a moon bouncer, volleyball, and kid's games are scheduled to keep visitors busy and having fun throughout the day.
