Local Veterans’ Concerns Change Veterans Day Event Date
Artesia’s Veterans Day Event committee decided March 21 to hold the event on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 10, rather than on Sunday Nov. 11.
A decision was made to promote and enhance some of the changes Artesia’s Veterans Day program will be featuring, and to give everyone in the area a chance to celebrate Veterans Day in Artesia. Artesia’s Veterans Day theme for 2007 is, “Freedom is not Free.”
“We’re making some modest changes,” said City Manager Maria Dadian, a member of the committee. “We want to give everyone a chance to enjoy their own events, and ours as well.”
Veterans Day is always a very important holiday to Artesians, as it is one of the principal ways to recognize those who served with pride and dedication to ensure America’s basic ideals of freedom by serving in the Armed Forces. The event usually draws over 500 people, but Artesia is working to get a much larger turnout this year, and with good reason.
Some of the changes hinted at by the City Manager include determining other ways to make this year’s event better than ever, such as increasing the amount of static displays and demonstrations, stream lining the formal ceremony with out losing our home town flavor, and revamping the structure of the event.
Another issue was Sunday parking, as Veterans Day falls on a Sunday this year. Larry R. Nelson, a Councilmember and a committee member, added, “Holding an event on Sunday in Artesia Park is not a good option. This will cause unwarranted traffic congestion to the residents of Artesia. No one wishes to compete with Holy Family for parking on Sunday.”
