Historical District Dedication
On the plaque in front of the Old Fire Station 30 are the words, "The roots of our history will grow the seeds of our future."
Artesia dedicated its Historical District on March 10 at 10 a.m., with a groundbreaking ceremony for Old Fire Station 30. A number of gifts from ex-firefighters and the L.A. County Fire Museum were presented to Mayor and Project Manager John P. Lyon , including a 1941 fire truck, uniforms, a helmet, and miniature fire trucks.
"This is yesterday's dream today," said Mayor and Project Leader John P. Lyon.
The largest donation will be a 1941 fire truck that is being loaned by L.A. County Fire Museum. The truck wasn't available for the groundbreaking ceremony, as it was still being prepared, but a photo of Firestation 30's crew with a similar fire truck, featuring some of the retired firefighters who were present at the ceremony, was available.
Hogan Willeford, 93, used to be the captain of Old Fire Station 30. He donated his firefighter's helmet to the museum. Other donations from Fred Earl and Joe Harkema, both retired firefighters, included a dress uniform, and almost 50 miniature fire truck replicas.
The Fire Station and the museum are only separated by old railroad tracks.
The Historical District is a joint effort by the City of Artesia and the Artesia Historical District to preserve the history of the city.
The museum is located at 18644 Alburtis, and the District encompasses nearby residential homes, a section of downtown Pioneer Blvd., and the Artesia Water Tower.
