Veterans Day in Artesia

Sentimental tears and grateful smiles marked this year’s Veterans Day event in Artesia.

Congresswoman Linda Sanchez rewarded three veterans medals they earned almost 60 years ago in World War II.  Two of the veterans were deceased, and misty-eyed family members accepted the medals on their behalf.  After the ceremony, live music from the 9 Carat Gold swing band and building contractor Tony Martins’ famous tri-tips were served.

District Supervisor and Navy veteran Don Knabe delivered a speech expressing the importance of gratitude toward veterans and active duty military.  “If you see a veteran on the street, thank him or her … all veterans welcome any appreciation for the work they have done,” said Knabe.

The Artesia DES marching band set the mood for the entire event, playing patriotic music and being an integral part of the ceremony.  Master Sergeant Schafer’s Southeast Academy ROTC cadets performed marching drills, a flag-folding ceremony, and offered a helping hand as volunteers to the City.

Guests found the displays to be interesting and informational.  These displays included a 105 mm howitzer, Humvees, jeeps, and a mini-jet ride for children.

The City of Artesia also gives special thanks to Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base for their support.
