Red Ribbon Week
DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena was killed by big-time drug traffickers in February 1985. Kiki was about to expose them to the public.
Shortly after Kiki's death, Congressman Duncan Hunter and high school friend Henry Lozano launched an anti-drug program called Camarena Kids in Kiki's hometown of Calexico, Calif.
Hundreds of club members wore red ribbons and swore to lead drug free lives.
It was only a matter of time until Red Ribbon Week began to gain popularity in California and later the entire United States.
The City will be conducting an Red Ribbon Assembly at Artesia Park on Oct. 26 at 10 a.m.
