What does Public Works do?

You see their orange shirts, and most people understand that they are maintaining our streets; as that is where they are most visible.  But Public Works is much more.

Aside from fixing potholes and minor street repairs, the job of Public Works is to administrate and implement capital improvements and to provide maintenance services to city facilities and vehicles.

General Maintenance

Public Works trims and cares for plants and trees, performs a variety of handyman repairs and light construction for the City's public buildings and parks.  Maintenance includes trash pick-up, painting, and stocking bathrooms with toilet paper and soap.  They also repair the City's vehicles.

It takes a lot of hard work to prepare for and clean up after an event, and the City relies on the experience and know-how of Public Works to set up the chairs, canopies, sound system, tables, etc. that make an event successful.

Graffiti Clean-up

The city has a policy to remove graffiti on public property within 24 hours and it is up to Public Works' crews to perform this task. They are equipped with a special "Graffiti Tracker" camera that stores the monikers of taggers with the GPS location of those taggings. When a tagger is caught, the tagger or his/her family is taken to court to pay for the cost of cleaning up graffiti.
