Former Artesia Council Members
Antonio Mendoza
Elected: March 1997
Term Ended: November 2006
Antonio (Tony) Mendoza left Artesia City Council to serve his newly elected position as State Assemblyman in 2007.
During his years of service, Tony Mendoza was a fourth grade teacher at Brooklyn Avenue Elementary School in East Los Angeles.
Tony attended California State University, Long Beach, and received a bachelor’s degree in Political Science, concentrating on Public Administration. He moved to Artesia, where he became interested in giving back to the community. In 1997 he was elected to the Artesia City Council as the youngest Council Member in the city’s history, and was re-elected in 2001 & 2005. On the Council, he has worked to stop gang violence, improve services that benefit women and children and help at-risk youth.
Tony Mendoza was active in United Teachers Los Angeles, where he served on
the Board of Directors and as a representative to the California Teachers
Association and the National Education Association. He became active in his
union when it became clear that teachers do not always receive the support
they need to succeed and schools in urban school districts are often neglected
to the point of disrepair. Tony fought for equal resources for all school
districts.
Tony and his wife Leticia, have three daughters: Samantha, Anndrea, and Annais.
