Youth Safety Expo 2011

As part of the Safe Routes to School, Artesia hosts a Youth Safety Expo. This year the event will be on March 12. The Expo provides information about various public safety agencies, and focuses on safety tips for youth.

Sheriff helicopters, fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, and other first responders will be at the event to help teach about their respective fields. Animal Control also hosts a pet adoption clinic during this event.

Children will be invited to take part in a “Bicycle Ride-Along” from A. J. Padelford Park to Artesia Park, and they will accompanied by L.A. Country Sheriff deputies. While on this bike ride, deputies will teach children important information on how best to ride a bike safely and how to interpret the various signs and signals that one might encounter on the road.

In addition, a special raffle will be held so children can win bicycles, helmets, skateboards, and other cool items.

Artesia receives funding from Safe Routes to School, a federal program through the Department of Transportation meant to make walking and riding a bike to school safer. Artesia has installed a crossing signal on two previously dangerous intersections on 183rd and Alburtis, and Pioneer and 176th Street to assist students walking to school.

Walking and riding bikes to school alleviates traffic congestion around schools, and reducing the amount of vehicle traffic on roads also creates a cleaner environment in which to breathe. At Artesia schools, students participate in the International Walk to School Day, a day when children and their parents are asked to walk or ride their bikes to school, rather than use their vehicle. Students also participate in special sessions involving “pop-up cities”, where students can learn what each signal and sign that one might encounter on the street means.

These programs are provided by Youth Educational Sports, Inc. (or YES, Inc.). The 100% hands-on reinforcement activities taught in the Traffic Safety CITY are formatted to fit your school’s time restraints. There website is www.yesports.org.
