Rendezvous with destiny
Artesia’s Veterans Day Event is growing larger each year, having started from a small ceremony just a few years ago and evolving to the much larger regional event of today.
Every year a particular group is given a special tribute. Last year was the survivors of the USS Indianapolis. This year, we will be honoring the 101st Airborne Division – the Screaming Eagles. The theme is “Rendezvous with Destiny,” a phrase borrowed by the first commander of the 101st Airborne.
According to the Screaming Eagle’s website, upon the activation of the 101st Airborne Division on August 16, 1942, Major General William C. Lee, the division’s first commanding officer, said that “The 101st has no history, but it has a rendezvous with destiny.”
Most importantly, all veterans of all military branches will be honored during the event; which will feature important information and outreach for all veterans from groups such as Veterans Affairs, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and others.
The Office of Congresswoman Linda Sanchez will be recognizing veterans and presenting them with long-lost or stolen medals that they’ve earned during active duty.
In addition, Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base and various military vehicle clubs will be bringing equipment and vehicles for display.
