Artesians enjoy Public Safety Expo, Pet Adoption program
The Public Safety Expo on March 7 opened up with a bicycle safety ride-a-long from A.J. Padelford Park to Artesia Park.
About 1500 people showed up to view the displays and various demonstrations, such as the K-9 drug search, fire extinguisher demonstration, and the Jaws of Life exhibition.
Two sheriff helicopters were also flown in, and a number of other vehicles were on display, including an old 1950s-era fire truck and a prison transportation bus.
For the first time ever, the Department of Animal Control also participated in the event with a Pet Adoption program, featuring a number of spayed or neutered canines and felines, for a nominal fee.
Firefighters, sheriffs, and other public safety personnel were given recognition for their service, of these Steve Perkins from Fire Station 30 received Firefighter of the Year, Erika Mendoza of Lakewood Sheriff Station received Sheriff Deputy of the Year, and Artesia resident Christina Amezola received the prestigious Public Safety Partner of the Year for her role in helping the sheriffs department solve a series of commercial burglaries.
