Artesia News Obituary
Doug Padelford
“Pillar of the Community”
1948 - 2005
One of the Artesia’s most influential people passed away unexpectedly on June 8. In the Artesia-Cerritos community, his legacy remains one of service and civic duty. According to one family member, Douglas Padelford came home the night before, fell asleep, and was found dead the following morning, due to complications of diabetes.
Doug Padelford continued the contributions of his father, Warren, and his grandfather A.J. before him, in helping the cities of Artesia and Cerritos grow.
After getting his diploma at Artesia High School, Doug studied architecture at USC. Padelford always kept USC close to his heart, especially the marching band, which his son Brett currently is assistant director of.
As an architect, Doug helped design a few of the recognizable landmarks in the region, including the Cerritos Auto Square, Artesia Town Center, the original Cerritos Library, and Andy’s Nursery (now Armstrong Garden Center).
After his father Warren died in 2002, Doug inherited the family business, A.J. Padelford and Son, named after his grandfather, who was also a pillar of the community.
His contributions to the public also included his time on the Artesia Planning Commission and the Cerritos Economic Development Commission.
Doug is survived by his wife, Anita, his siblings, Dan Padelford and Diane
Padelford-Young, and his two sons. His service was held June 14 at the St.
Cornelius Catholic Church in Long Beach.
