Robert Ochoa, 56, spent the greater part of his life in Artesia, attending classes at Elliot Elementary, Faye Ross, Artesia High School (when it was still part of Artesia), and graduating high school at Gahr High School. He passed away August 15 from complications due to surgery.
Robert loved sports, especially baseball, and played in baseball leagues ever since he was in school. Starting in the Farm team, Robert worked his way up to the Pony Leagues. Robert was a big man, over six feet; and earned the name “Big Bopp” from his baseball friends.
“He always had a smile on his face,” said his mother, who only identified herself as Mrs. P. Ochoa, and this of course, earned him another nickname; Smiley.
“He loved sports,” said Mrs. Ochoa, “he loved being around people, and he loved to help people.”
Robert's specialty in helping people was through automobile repair, and he worked as truck mechanic for Safeway until he retired.
Robert Ochoa is survived by his mother, two brothers Rudy and Mike, and his daughter Kristie.
