New Miss Artesia, Miss Artesia Teen, crowned
The City of Artesia welcomes the newly crowned Artesia Royal Court! On Saturday, May 23rd at the Albert O. Little Community Center, six young ladies were chosen to represent the city for one year as Miss Artesia, Miss Artesia Teen and their princesses.
This year’s theme was in celebration of the City of Artesia’s 50th anniversary. An energetic opening number was preformed by the 17 contestants and the outgoing 2008 Artesia Court.
Dressed in poodle skirts and 50’s inspired attire, they strolled, hula hooped and jived to a medley of songs from the era. The mistresses of ceremonies, Mary-Krystle Viramontes (Miss Artesia Teen 200) and Desiree Gonzalez (Miss Artesia Teen 2007) began the evening dolled up as diner waitresses.
Prior to taking the stage, each contestant was interviewed buy the distinguished judges. Their next major score would come from an onstage introduction, dressed in their professional business attire. Each contestant had prepared an introduction and short speech explaining why they want to become the next Miss Artesia or Miss Artesia Teen.
Next was the active wear competition where the contestants displayed a range of personal interests. An array of activities was presented, including ballet, hip hop, football, cheer and even baking. Meghan Parreira was awarded “Best Active Wear” for entertaining the crowd with her performance as a mime! Among the audience were sponsors, city officials and visiting royalty from neighboring cities. Mayor Pro Tem, Tony Lima, commended the contestants on the taking part in this year’s event.
The most enchanting part of the competition is the evening gown portion. Each young lady took the stage one by one and charmed the judges with their poise and confidence in the gown of their choosing. The final portion of the competition was the onstage question where the contestants displayed the ability to maintain grace under pressure. As the scores were tallied, it was time to say farewell to the outgoing Artesia court. Miss Artesia 2008, Ayushka Singh-Gharib and Miss Artesia Teen 2008, Chelsie Cox presented the audience with a farewell video and thanked their Princesses, Marissa Lazalde, Susana Batres, Shannon Fitzgerald and Cristal Ibarra for a wonderful year. Before they passed the royal torch onto a new set of girls they took their final walk down the runway.
The dazzling contestants took the stage for the coronation. The special awards were called first and Cinthia Parra won “Miss Photogenic”. It was time to name the incoming Artesia court. Emily Gilliland beamed as they called her name for Miss Artesia 2009. Joining her is Miss Artesia Teen Princesses Jazmine Lucero, who also won “Miss Congeniality” and Marisa Romo. Jackie Skiles was delighted as she was crowned Miss Artesia 2009. Accompanying her will be Miss Artesia Princesses Lorraine Llamas and Kandice Perez.
These six young ladies will represent the City of Artesia for one year as they attend several city events. Each one of them has expressed their gratitude to the City of Artesia for providing this opportunity to young ladies in the community.
