New Miss Artesia 2010 crowned!

It was an eventful evening as the City of Artesia crowned a new 2010 Royal Court.  The annual Miss Artesia and Miss Artesia Teen pageant was held on June 5th at the Albert O. Little Community Center where seven contestants competed for the coveted title of Miss Artesia and eleven young ladies competed for the title of Miss Artesia Teen.

The “American Legends” theme was a tribute to performers who have forever impacted the music industry.  The 2009 Artesia Court and 2010 Contestants opened the show as they danced to songs by Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash, Elvis and Selena.  It was an honor to have Miss Artesia Teen 2008, Chelsie Cox, and Miss Artesia 2008, Ayushka Singh-Gharib return as the mistresses of ceremonies.

The contestants were judged in four categories.  Prior to the onstage portion, the young ladies interviewed with each of their judges.  The next category was an onstage introduction where each contestant introduced themselves dressed in professional attire and explained why they wanted to be the next Miss Artesia or Miss Artesia Teen.  Following the onstage introductions was the Active Wear competition where the contestants displayed a range of personal interests.  An array of activities was presented, including a chef, gymnastics, color guard, cheer and even Indian dancing.  Stephanie Rivas was awarded “Best Active Wear” for captivating the crowd with her Polynesian dance.

City officials, sponsors and visiting royalty from neighboring cities were amongst the three hundred people who came to support the ladies taking part in this year’s event.  Mayor, Tony Lima, was impressed with each contestant and recognized them for their hard work.  Assembly member, Tony Mendoza, also attended the event and wished the young ladies good luck.

As always, the most glamorous part of the competition is the evening gown portion.  One by one the contestants took the stage displaying poise and confidence in their choice of gown.  The final portion of the competition was the onstage question where the young ladies displayed the ability to maintain grace under pressure.  As the scores were tallied, it was time to say farewell to the outgoing Artesia court.  Miss Artesia 2009, Jackie Skiles and Miss Artesia Teen 2009, Emily Gilliland presented the audience with a farewell video and thanked their Princesses, Lorraine Llamas, Kandice Perez, Marisa Romo and Vivian Beard for an unforgettable year.

Again the beautiful contestants took to the stage and paraded down the runway one last time before beginning the coronation.  Kristinicole Elms was in shock as her name was called for Miss Artesia Teen 2010.  Artesia Teen Princesses are Anastasia Guanio and Alexis Lucero who was voted “Miss Congeniality” by her fellow contestants.  Marlene Hernandez was overjoyed to be crowned Miss Artesia 2010 and was awarded “Miss Photogenic”.  Miss Artesia Princesses are Dominique Torres and Celia Ramirez.  These six young ladies will represent the City of Artesia for one year as they attend several city events.  They are looking forward to the wonderful experiences that lie ahead and are grateful for the opportunity to be a part of an organization that allows them to get involved in their community.
