Microchip your dog
You probably never think that you and your pet will ever be separated but the multidude of natural disasters that have impacted the United States over the last few years have taught us that it happens all too often. The BEST way to re-unite lost pets with their owners is when a pet is properly and permanently identified with a microchip.
Summer holds its own perils During the months of June, July, and August, more than anytime during the year, animal shelters in Los Angeles and Orange County are inundated with lost pets. It may be the fireworks of the Fourth or the open doors during the warmer weather; whatever the cause, more dogs and cats are separated from their owners during these times. According to reports from regional shelter directors, the days around July 4th are their busiest of the year. And many of those lost pets NEVER find their way back home!!!
To ensure that your pet is returned to you if you are separated from each other, Southern California Veterinary Medical Association (SCVMA) veterinarians and animal shelters advocate the placement of a microchip in all pets. Collars can fall off or be removed. Microchips are a permanent means of identifying your pet whether they are lost locally or on a family trip to the Grand Canon, Chicago, or New England.
Microchips are the size of a grain of rice and are painlessly injected under the skin using a syringe similar to what is used for vaccinations. However, just inserting a microchip doesn't guarantee a safe return. The all important next step is to register the microchip so that a grand reunion celebration can occur in the case of your pet escaping. If your pet is currently micro-chipped, please make sure that your contact information is kept current with the company that registered your chip.
