Gahr High School Government Teacher visits Washington, DC for President Obama's Inauguration
Miguel Canales, 32, is a government teacher at Gahr High School and the first Latino Planning Commissioner for the City of Artesia. He recently attended the inauguration of President Barack Obama on January 20.
“In my 32 years of life, there has not been a historical event of this magnitude,” said Canales, who believes that his experience at the inauguration will greatly enhance his government classes that he teaches at Gahr High School.
His wife, Veronica Elizabeth Bloomfield, said that when she was speaking to him during the event, Canales’s voice sounded “quiet, pensive, and full of awe.”
“There are people here from all over the world,” was the most memorable phrase Canales uttered to his wife.
Canales said that the people in the town were very friendly, even “united.” “I talked to people from Australia, France, England, Kenya, Jamaica, Bahamas, Bermuda, South America and all over our nation,” said Canales.
Canales said he will always remember the place he stood when Obama made his first speech as president. “Of course all of you had a better view on TV of what was happening up there, but the experience, the excitement of the crowd, that is what I was there for,” said Canales.
“It was very cold and crowded,” said Canales. “Getting from one place to the next took hours. But I would do it all over again, no doubt about it.”
