Historical Society hosts its Annual Gala
The Artesia Historical Society held their 6th Annual Gala Dinner on Saturday, October 17, in the Albert O. Little Community Center at the Artesia Park.
The theme, "Celebrating the Fabulous '50s" was in honor of the City of Artesia's 50th Anniversary, being celebrated throughout 2009. The evening was AHS's annual major fundraiser and was choreographed to help guests revisit the era of Rock and Roll. Attendees were encouraged to dress in the styles of the 1950s.
Arriving guests were met at the entrance by a mock soda fountain manned by costumed carhop Sarah Kubinski and soda jerk Lucas Young making his deliveries on roller skates.
The Community Center was decorated with posters of legendary entertainers, such as Elvis Presley, James Dean, Audrey Hepburn, John Wayne and Marilyn Monroe, along with large photographs of the "hot" cars of the day.
Black 78 and 45 rpm records were displayed prominently throughout the room along with a display of old record players provided by member Larry Tinkler.
Contributions to AHS's School Bus Scholarship are welcome and may be mailed to the Society at PO Box 83, Artesia, CA 90702. Copies of the Artesia Historical Society Cook Book, REcipes, and History Never Gets Old are available in person for $20 per copy or by mail for $25 per copy.
Inquiries may be made by calling Barbara Applebury at (562) 865-3107.
