County says hazardous waste roundup a success

County Department of Public Works reports the amount of hazardous waste and E-waste collected during roundup

In conjunction with Artesia’s annual Just Dump It (legally) Campaign on September 6, another type of collection event is usually happening; a hazardous waste and E-waste roundup.

The Sanitation Districts and the County’s Department of Public Works reported collecting 375 gallons of used motor oil; 2,875 gallons of used paint; 137 used car batteries, 191 computer monitors; 8,500 pounds of miscellaneous E-waste, and 51 drums of other miscellaneous wastes such as pesticides and pool chemicals.

Stephen Maguin, Chief Engineer and General Manager of the Sanitation Districts, said “approximately 80 percent of this material will be recycled and reused, and the remaining 20 percent will be either incinerated or treated at a legal disposal facility.”

Approximately 610 households in Artesia and adjacent communities were served by this collection, said Maguin.

“The Sanitation Districts and the County Department of Public Works wish to express their sincere appreciation for the City of Artesia’s hosting of this hazardous waste/e-waste collection day,” said Maguin.
