Coyote sightings in City neighborhoods have become increasingly common. While the City does not handle or remove coyotes directly, it does keep track of sightings and encounters. Residents can report coyote sightings at http://cityofartesia.us/278/Coyotes-Other-Wildlife For further assistance, sightings and incidents can also be reported to the State Department of Fish and Wildlife at apps.wildlife.ca.gov/wir or by phone at 562-596-3885. Problem coyotes and incidents should be reported to Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control at
562-940-6898.
Residents are reminded that a few simple actions can help minimize conflicts between residents, pets, and coyotes:
- If you encounter a coyote, remember to make yourself appear as big as possible and be loud! Stand tall with your arms overhead, hold your ground, and never run.
- It is crucial not to feed coyotes as this can encourage aggressive behavior. Remove ripe garden vegetables and fallen fruit, and store pet food indoors. Ensure that garbage and compost containers are tightly sealed.
- Take other preventive measures such as adding motion sensing lighting to deter coyotes.
By taking a few simple actions and staying vigilant, we can keep pets, property, and ourselves safe.
