On March 20, 2001, Larry R. Nelson Sr., in the third year of his City Council term, became the 21st Mayor of the City of Artesia. Larry has lived in Artesia for the past 24 years, and seen many changes take place. In 1999, he decided to try and make a difference in the City's evolution, and ran for the City Council.
Born in Superior, Wisconsin, Mayor Nelson joined the Navy in 1967, married his wife Pat in 1970 and raised one son. He moved his family to California in 1972, settling in Artesia. As a past Citizen of the Year, past president of People to People (a community charitable organization), past Parks & Recreation Commissioner, a member of the Pioneer Days Committee and, most recently, honoree as Ambassador of the Year from the Artesia Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Nelson has developed a good, strong base in the community. Working as part of "Team Artesia" - a concept he introduced this year to the Council - is something that he takes great pride in. He wants to keep the momentum of the past two years going full-speed ahead, and accomplish what he and the other members of the City Council have set out to do.
Mayor Nelson believes that senior citizens are the window to the city's past, children and young people of the city are the door to the future, and diversity is what Artesia is all about. According to Webster's Dictionary, the definition of "diverse" reads as follows: "Differing from one another, unlike, having various forms and qualities." This is Artesia, "Where every day is a good day."
