Celebrating 50 years of Artesia
2009 marks a major milestone for the town of Artesia. On May 29, Artesia as an incorporated city will officially become a pentagenarian (50-year-old), and everyone is invited to the celebration.
Of course, the town of Artesia is much older than 50 years old. When the Artesia Public School District was formed on May 3, 1875, the village of Artesia formally became a governmental reality. It remained thus until the incorporation of the City on May 29, 1959.
The City of Artesia has adopted a new logo for the 50th Anniversary, which is featured in the city newsletter, and will be used on merchandise to be sold at the City Store located at Artesia City Hall, or given out at all the events. Artesia also has its first 12-month calendar, which is available for free in the city newsletter and at City Hall.
The very first event for 2009 is the 5K Walk/Run, a perfect warm-up for an action-packed year. The 5K is scheduled for January 10 at 8 a.m. Other events include 50th Anniversary Gala, a Community Birthday Celebration, and a 50th Anniversary fair and parade. All normal city events will have a 1950’s theme. These events are all listed in the community calendar.
There will be many volunteer opportunities in the coming months for our community’s philanthropists, and any contributions are greatly appreciated. See the city’s website for volunteer applications, as well as updates on city events.
