Toddlers Learn to Read

Mark Anthony is a three and half year old who is learning to read. He is a student of the Creative Learning Systems, Inc. Toddler University Reading Program, designed to teach children to read between the ages of 3 ½ to 6 years of age. Mark Anthony attends a Toddler University Reading class on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Artesia Child Development Center taught by Toi Hines.

Toddler University is an innovative program that focuses on early intervention empowering the parent to take control of the child’s learning.
Parents learn how to teach their children to read and to understand their child’s learning style, strengths and weaknesses.

Children begin the program by learning their letters, sounds, and sight word recognition. They finish the program reading between the second to fourth grade level expectancy. The complete program takes between 12 to 18 months depending on the child’s age. The program uses a strong phonics base with emphasis on skill mastery and reading comprehension.

Toddler University is an affordable program. Parents are more than willing to pay for the class because of their child’s achievement.

Mrs. Hines is a trained program facilitator. She brought the program to Southern California from Atlanta, Georgia after experiencing the program’s success. She was introduced to the program by Dr. Joyce A. Nash-Nadir, Founder of Creative Learning Systems, Inc. when she and her son Brandon took the class. Brandon has consistently read above grade level expectancy, giving him an academic advantage.

“It is amazing to see how much parents can teach and how much children can learn at this early age. All of the readers have an advantage and that is demonstrated in their success in school.”

The program was designed for English speaking students, but has proven to be equally as successful for students who speak English as a second language.

The parents learn to read English while teaching their children. It has helped parents like Leticia Maldonado. Maldonado saw her English, reading and speaking skills improve while taking the class. “I like this program because it helps both me and my son Mark Anthony.”

Mark Anthony and his classmates will complete their first quarter in June. Saturday, June 18, 2005, at 11:00 a.m., we will have our First Quarter Completion Program at Artesia CDC located at 18730 Clarkdale Avenue. The children will be able to demonstrate what they have learned in just 12 weeks.

Mrs. Hines hopes to reach as may parents as possible to get them involved in the program. Classes are now being offered in Artesia, Bellflower, and Long Beach. More information about the program can be obtained by contacting Mrs. Hines at (562) 422-5067.
