Artesia’s going RED!

Mayor Larry R. Nelson has declared February 3 as “Wear Red for Women” Day. All citizens are urged to show their support for women and the fight against heart disease by commemorating this day by wearing the color RED.

Increasing awareness empowers women to reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease, and this means we can save thousands of lives each year.

Facts about heart diseases:

• Diseases of the heart are the nation’s leading cause of death and stroke is the third leading cause of death.
• Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) claim the lives of over 480,000 American females (about one death per minute) each year.
• In 2006, the estimated direct and indirect cost of cardiovascular diseases and stroke in the U.S. is estimated at $403.1 billion.
• More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next six leading causes of death combined, including all cancers.
• Only 13 percent of women consider cardiovascular disease their greatest risk.

February is designated as American Heart Month. Don’t forget to “wear RED for women” on February 3!
