Artesia Historical Society Welcomes Participation and Announces Upcoming Events

The Artesia Historical Society in partnership with the City of Artesia is striving to capture and maintain historical information about Artesia. A 1929 vintage home, donated to the society and city, was relocated from its original site on Pioneer Blvd. to 18644 Alburtis, to be used as a new Artesia Historical Museum. The house has now been restored and material is being gathered for public exhibit. In partnership with the ABCUSD, hundreds of school children attended tours and workshops at the museum during the past school year. The positive response was overwhelming.
The Society has two events scheduled in the near future and would like to remind the community to “save the dates.”

The official dedication of the new Artesia Historical Museum is set for Saturday September 24, 2005 at 1:00 PM at 18644 Alburtis, Artesia. LA County Supervisor, Don Knabe will act as MC and the program will feature recognition of many who have contributed to the restoration and establishment of the museum. The event will feature music by the DES Band; a display of model railroads honoring the museum’s proximity to the old Pacific Electric Railroad and the announcement of future regularly scheduled museum hours. In addition there will be a “birthday” celebration of the 130th anniversary of the first school established in Artesia. The event is open to the public.

On October 8, 2005 the organization will have their primary annual fundraiser. This year’s “Autumn Swing” will be a black-tie gala dinner with entertainment provided by “3 For the Show” a group that performs Swing music from the 1930s and 1940s. A dinner buffet from Café Camellia featuring chef carved prime rib will be served. This is the second annual semi-formal evening the Society has sponsored and is intended to be an ongoing annual event. Last year’s gala evening was a huge success and the same is expected for this year. Don’t be left out---plan to attend this major community gala; for information about tickets contact Ron Eveland at (562) 860-3623.

Tours of the museum will be available during both of the above events.

Membership in the Artesia Historical Society is open to anyone in the community or those with ties to the community who are interested in our history. Those interested in becoming a member should contact Betty Lou Ormonde at (562) 860-1031.

If anyone has historical items such as pictures, news articles, school memorabilia, etc., the society would appreciate the opportunity to preserve those items either by obtaining the originals or making copies of pictures or documents, where possible, for the museum’s collection and exhibition. Please contact Barbara Applebury at (562) 865-3107 if you have items that the Society can obtain and preserve for future generations. Don’t let our history be lost!

Remember; don’t miss out on the fun. Plan to attend both events and become involved in the Artesia Historical Society! Everyone’s participation is welcomed and appreciated.
