Service Builds Tomorrow's Leaders

Youth Mentoring and Employment Program

As a result of the July 10, 2006 City Council meeting, City Council directed staff to establish a Service Builds Tomorrows Leaders Youth Mentoring and Employment Program for students who retain a favorable scholastic standing.

The Service Builds Tomorrows Leaders Youth Mentoring and Employment Program would be designed for students from ages 15 to 18 (high school age) who are interested in learning about a career in Municipal Public Service. The program's main goal is to provide the young adult with a sense of responsibility to themselves and their future.

The eligibility requirements a student must meet are as follows:

An application package would be assembled identifying the requirements above and recruitment would begin the April preceding the summer work schedule. Staff is suggesting a work schedule for successful candidates beginning the last Monday of June through the last Friday before Labor Day in September. A total of 200 hours over 10 weeks could provide an average of 20 hours per week, per student worker.

Currently, the City hires up to three summer lunch program temporary employees and participates in the ABCUSD student job training program with two students at each park and two students at city hall. Additionally, there is one permanent part-time employee at each park.

As a successful candidate with acceptance to enter the program, an opportunity is provided to work in conjunction with city personnel who would mentor and train the young adult on operation and service of municipal functions. Under the Service Builds Tomorrows Leaders Youth Mentoring and Employment Program, students could be mentored and employed in up to 6 different positions offered by the City.

Highly interactive program positions would include the following:

•  Three (3) in the Parks and Recreation department

•  One (1) in Planning department

•  One (1) in Finance department

•  One (1) in Administration department

The Service Builds Tomorrows Leaders Youth Mentoring and Employment Program will teach the young adult the values of integrity, commitment, teamwork, community, and excellence. The program will allow a student the opportunity to learn basic municipal service skills. Additionally, it will provide a record of experience and preparation for a career in local government.
