Cinco de Mayo

On the 5 th of May, 1862, a small force of 4000 Mexican soldiers, with the help of U.S. supplies, defeated a larger 8000-man French army. This victory has become a popular party holiday, similar in practice to St. Patrick's Day, in both Mexico and the U.S.

On the afternoon of Saturday, May 5, 2007; the City of Artesia and the A.J. Padelford Park Parent Group held its annual Cinco de Mayo celebration at A.J. Padelford Park.

The program began with Mini Carnival games for children 12 years of age and younger and Arts & Crafts during the event. Entertainment began with a presentation from the Burbank Elementary Ballet Folklorico Group performance following an introduction by City Council and dignitaries.

Entertainment continued with live mariachi band Infante and Mexican regional singer Miguel Angel Espinoza who was a crowd-winner with his performance. Niemes Elementary School Ballet Folklorico was the second Mexican Regional Dance performers of the event.

As always, great Authentic Mexican food was available to event participants to enjoy throughout the event. The food was provided by the A.J. Padelford Parent Group and included tacos, quesadillas, fruit cocktails, corn on the cob, fresh fruit waters, candy, and more. The event concluded with a Parent Group fundraiser raffle.

This year's Cinco de Mayo event was viewed by participants to be one of the greatest Cinco de Mayo celebrations they had seen for some time.
