Join us on Youth Safety Day for the Public Safety Expo!
On February 25, Artesia Parks & Recreation, in conjunction with Safe Routes to School, is hosting Youth Safety Day, along with the Public Safety Expo.
The purpose is twofold. First, the program teaches youth about bicycle safety and the importance of safety gear. Secondly, public safety organizations like the Sheriffs, L.A. County Fire, CARE Ambulance, Animal Control, and others team up with Artesia to put on an awesome event, showcasing drug and bomb-sniffing canines, robots that can defuse bombs, state-of-the-art law enforcement equipment, historical fire equipment, and Sky Knight, the Sheriffs helicopter which can sometimes be seen patroling our skies.
For more information, speak to Jose at (562) 407-1723. Here's the flyer.

City Council advocates voluntary plastic bag ban
As numerous cities throughout the region have implemented mandatory plastic bans, Artesia is looking to do something a little different. Rather than add further regulations on businesses, the City Council is counting on free will.
On November 14, City Council voted to propose a community outreach program to educate the public on the negative impacts of plastic carryout bags and the benefits of reusable bags.
Plastic bags are one of the most numerous pieces of litter in the world, making up about 25 percent of litter in L.A. County alone. This is because in L.A. County about six billion plastic bags are used, which is approximately 600 bags per person. Of these, five percent are recycled and the rest wind up in landfill, beaches, waterways, parks, and roads.

Transparency of city salaries
Because of the recent scandal with the City of Bell and the salaries of their City Council, City Manager, and other officials, a lot of interest has been generated regarding the pay of public officials.
Artesia acknowledges this interest and supports it. Salaries of city officials and employees can be seen on the city website at www.cityofartesia.us/salarycompensation page.
