Survivors of USS Indianapolis to take part in Artesia’s Veterans Day Event
Survivors from the USS Indianapolis tragedy of World War 2 will participate and be honored at Artesia’s Veterans Day Event.
On July 30, 1945 the USS Indianapolis was struck by a Japanese torpedo shortly after delivering the world’s first atomic bomb to island of Tinian. Of the 1,196 aboard, only 900 made it into the water. Shark attacks began as the sun rose, and five days later only 317 sailors remained alive.
Indianapolis survivors from all over California will be joining area veterans on November 10 to honor veterans and to be honored for their own sacrifices, as the ‘Indy survivors’ embody the theme of this year’s Veterans Day, “Freedom is not free.”
Please be sure to save the date for this memorable event, and feel free to bring along friends and family. It is open to the public.
The park will be decorated with tents and other material donated from the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base. Vehicles from local military vehicle clubs and the Military Vehicle Museum in El Monte will also be on display.
Children activities, food, static displays and live music will also be available.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Artesia Park; 18750 Clarkdale Avenue. The ceremony starts at 11 a.m. All veterans will receive recognition and a patriotic gift.
