Sheriff talks safety with seniors
One of Artesia's more well-known seniors was recently robbed in her home. As a response, Artesia's Sgt. Greg Knapp spoke with seniors Feb. 1 to go over home protection.
Knapp said, "Criminals like this usually look to enter homes when no one is there. They usually don't intend to encounter people ... occasionally targeting the elderly, because of their age and vulnerability."
"But even when you're not home," explained Knapp, "there's still plenty you can do to prevent your home from being invaded."
Knapp said that purchasing a "Beware of Dog" sign, installing motion lights, installing a screen security door, purchasing an alarm system, would deter most burglars. "I know you don't want to live in a fort, but using some of these safety precautions can go a long way in preventing burglaries," said Knapp.
Call 9-1-1 as soon as possible, even if you have to leave the phone off the hook.
