Municipal government, local businesses, work together during economic crisis
In Artesia, the City government and local businesses recognize their success is intertwined, and that there is already a partnership in existence. With the current economic crisis, public and private sectors are strengthening their relationship for their mutual benefits.
When Artesia's city government was faced with both an economic crisis and state raids on redevelopment funds, a budget crisis was created. City departments have made tough decisions that affect how the City will conduct its business in the future.
Fortunately, local businesses have stepped up to help where they can.
One example involves the decision to cancel various special events (except for Veterans Day) hosted by the City. Even popular events, like the 4th of July celebration, were canceled. However, Artesia's business community saved the 4th of July program by donating the $10,000 needed to continue the fireworks show.
To assist businesses, the City has streamlined its business license process, and pushed to create a business friendly environment, espeically by limiting taxes and investing in redevelopment.
