How to prevent ocean pollution from Artesia

Any litter or chemicals that enter storm drains run a chance of reaching the ocean.  The litter that enters storm drains is one of the biggest ocean and waterway pollutants.

Precipitation from rain flows over land or impervious and does not percolate into the ground.  As the runoff flows over the land or impervious surfaces (paved streets, parking lots, and building rooftops), it accumulates debris, chemicals, sediment or other pollutants taht could adversely affect water quality if the runoff is discharged untreated.

Here are a few things anyone can do to prevent this type of pollution:

  1. Properly dispose of hazardous substances such as used oil, cleaning supplies and paint.
  2. Never throw anything down any part of the storm drain system and report anyone who does.
  3. Use pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides properly and efficiently to prevent excess runoff.
  4. Report signs of potential pollutants such as soil, debris, or chemicals from construction sites.
  5. Install innovative stormwater practices such as rain barrels or rain gardens to capture stormwater.
  6. Pick up after your pets and dispose of their waste properly.
  7. Volunteer for local or regional stream cleanup days.
