District Superviser Don Knabe awards City of Artesia, Artesia Historical Society $100,000

Erin Stibal, from the Office of District Supervisor Don Knabe (pictured left), announced the City of Artesia and the Artesia Historical Society will be receiving a $100,000 grant to help develop the Artesia Historical District.

This occurred during the Historical Society’s 4th Annual Gala on September 29 in the Albert O. Little Community Center at Artesia Park.  Mayor John Martins expressed his appreciation and reiterated the city’s commitment and partnership with the Historical Society.

The Society plans to develop Old Fire Station 30 as their second community museum. The Gala is an annual fundraiser and this year the theme was “Dancing Under the Stars.”

Guests enjoyed an outstanding Prime-rib dinner again provided by Richard Ahn of Café Camellia, followed by a rousing raffle and live auction.  Mayor John Martins outbid those attending and went home with a U.S. Flag previously flown over the U.S. Capital presented to the Historical Society by Congresswoman Linda Sanchez for the event.

Entertainment for the evening included Dr. Fran Newman at the Piano, a ballroom dancing exhibition presented by The Arthur Murray Dance Studio, and entertainment and dancing with Cheryl Carter, a phenomenal Jazz vocalist who presented a wide selection of standards, originals, Latin-Brazilian and Blues.

In addition, guests were given an opportunity view exhibits highlighting the year’s major accomplishments for the Historical Society, which included the acquisition of the 1875 Artesia School Bell and architectural renderings of the planned Artesia Historic District.  Also on exhibit were memorabilia items and photos of Old Fire Station #30.

All funds raised at this event will be used to continue the many programs of the Artesia Historical Society, including but not limited to the maintenance and development of the museums, docent guided museum tours for school children, and the Oral History Program.
