Central Basin celebrates Water Awareness Month

Central Basin Municipal Water District has launched a social media campaign that includes a conservation giveaway contest for local residents during the month of May, which is Water Awareness Month.  The purpose of the campaign, which utilizes the District's website, Facebook and Twitter, is to engage the public and enhance consumer awareness about using water resources more efficiently.

Since May 1, the District has invited the public to submit their most creative water conservation ideas along with photos of how they conserve. The ideas are featured on the District's homepage and the first 50 residents who respond will receive a free water conservation kit.  Kits include a low-flow showerhead, water saving faucet nozzles and more.

"Since the District started the Water Cooler Blog in 2008, Central Basin has been at the forefronto f using social media to promote water conservation," said Central Basin Board President Ed Vasquez.  "It just makes sense that we use social media to increase our efforts during Water Awareness Month.  We hope everyone gets involved in this fun and educational campaign."

The District is also utilizing its student education programs and other conventional outreach to promote conservation during Water Awareness Month.

A colorful and educational direct-mail brochure has been developed for students in grades 9-12.  The brochure, titled "Your Water, Your Choice: Water Conservation Tips for Teens and Others," will be mailed out to more than 4,000 students.  The brochure features simple ways to conserve water indoors and outdoors.

In addition, Central Basin will be hosting a free gardening workshop on Friday, May 20 at the South Gate Senior Center from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  Attendees will learn about water-saving landscape practices, the benefits of using California-friendly plants and they will receive a free irrigation kit (while supplies last).  More information is available on the District website.
