Boy aims for hollyhock record

Austin O' Malley, nine years old, noticed an odd-looking flower growing in the family garden along 183rd Street in Artesia.

The flower was not intentionally planted there, yet it was attractive enough to convince Austin to continue caring for it.  That was back in March.  Today the flower, a hollyhock, is now 13 feet, 8 inches tall.

Pictured here, Austin and his father Sean O' Malley measure the length of the hollyhock.

"It's a few feet away from the world record," said Sean.

According to the Guiness Book of World Records, the tallest confirmed hollyhock grew to be 19 feet, 7 inches, and was grown by George Palmer of the United Kingdom in 1978.
