Artesia’s first annual 5K Fun Run/Walk may set a precedent for SoCal 5K events

Artesia’s First Annual 5K Fun Run/Walk exposed an opening in Southern California Runner’s schedules.

The 5K (five kilometer) was created, in part, to kick off Artesia’s 50th Anniversary, and runners from all over Los Angeles participated.  Two team members from the Los Angeles organization A Runner’s Circle finished first and second.  Alberto Ramos placed first with a time of 15 minutes, 48 seconds, and Tove Berg placed second at 16 minutes, 53 seconds.

“It seems there’s a demand for early calendar events like this for the runner community,” said event organizer Clayt Iske.

Many Artesians also participated.  Artesian Jonathan Devries, 17, placed 4th with a time of  19 minutes, 33 seconds; and 13-year-old Artesian Jessica Selby placed 8th with a time of 21 minutes, 9 seconds.  Selby won the Women’s Under 20 Division, and second in the women’s overall.

Selby, in a later interview, said, “I like pushing myself to the limit, and feeling that I’ve tried my hardest.”

Selby said that she’d eventually like to make it to the Olympics.

93 runners and walkers participated overall.  For the full 5k Fun/Run results, visit www.cityofartesia.us.  And for Artesia’s 50th Anniversary event videos, visit www.youtube.com/cityofartesia.
