Downtown Pioneer Boulevard improvements begin
Now that L.A. County Sanitation’s Sewer Replacement Project has continued past Pioneer Blvd., construction on the third and final phase of downtown’s revitalization can now begin.
Already, the signs have been posted announcing the start of the project.
The project boundaries are between 183rd and Pioneer, and 188th and Pioneer. The plan is to build a narrow median of various widths, which will feature palms, climbing roses, lantana, Australian poppies, and ground cover. These plants will be drought resistant and help conserve water while also creating a beautiful look. The plants will be watered through a drip and bubble irrigation system which will be operated by solar timers.
Animal license canvassing efforts by Animal Control
Officers from the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control will be in the City of Artesia beginning May 9, 2012 checking for current rabies vaccinations, ensuring residents are in compliance with licensing requirements. The canvassing is expected to take place over a three week period. California State law requires that all dogs over the age of four months be vaccinated against rabies and be licensed. Securing a dog license is an important part of identification and can assist animal control agencies if your pet becomes lost.
Dog owners are advised to be in compliance with licensing and the mandatory rabies vaccination if they reside in Artesia. Residents not in compliance will be subject to license fees and delinquency charges, including a $40 field enforcement fee, to offset the cost of the Departments field services. In order to avoid penalties, be sure to have evidence of current licensing. You can secure a new dog license by printing the application online at http://animalcare.lacounty.gov, or visiting your local County animal care center. If you license is not delinquent, you can also renew it through the internet.

City Council advocates voluntary plastic bag ban
As numerous cities throughout the region have implemented mandatory plastic bans, Artesia is looking to do something a little different. Rather than add further regulations on businesses, the City Council is counting on free will.
On November 14, City Council voted to propose a community outreach program to educate the public on the negative impacts of plastic carryout bags and the benefits of reusable bags.
Plastic bags are one of the most numerous pieces of litter in the world, making up about 25 percent of litter in L.A. County alone. This is because in L.A. County about six billion plastic bags are used, which is approximately 600 bags per person. Of these, five percent are recycled and the rest wind up in landfill, beaches, waterways, parks, and roads.

Transparency of city salaries
Because of the recent scandal with the City of Bell and the salaries of their City Council, City Manager, and other officials, a lot of interest has been generated regarding the pay of public officials.
Artesia acknowledges this interest and supports it. Salaries of city officials and employees can be seen on the city website at www.cityofartesia.us/salarycompensation page.
