Join Artesia as it recognizes vets on Veterans Day
You're invited to join the City of Artesia in honoring its veterans on Nov. 6. For 11 years, Artesia's been celebrating Veterans Day with a special ceremony, with each year filled with new surprises.
In 2008, the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base partnered with Artesia and has since been giving guests quite a show, landing Blackhawk helicopters in Artesia Park. Last year, the LAJFTB was especially geneorous by landing two helicopters!
Artesia's Veterans Day Committee is proud to work with the LAJFTB and is hoping for a similar contribution this year.
This year's ceremony will be much more streamlined than previous events, but with the same sentimental testament to the veterans of our Armed Forces. All veterans and their families are invited.
Artesia is also trying to recognize as many veterans as it possibly can, and so any vets who have not been recognized at a previous event, please contact the City as soon as possible.
The event starts at 10 a.m. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m
.
Call Andrew at (562) 865-6262 to be recognized by the City for your services. All veterans can apply, residence is not an issue.
Shoppers by 19-inch HDTV for 99 Cents!
"97, 98, 99!" That was the "count-up" (from 90 to 99) before Artesia City Council and 99 Cents Only Store representatives shouted out during the ribbon cutting ceremony at the store's grand opening on August 13.
.
Nine lucky customers won the opportunity purchase a 19-inch HDTV for 99 cents. Many of them were camped out since August 11 in order to get the television.
.
Two Artesia residents, Venerald Pureza and Irene Relosimon, won the opportunity to purchase the HDTV.
New roof for Community Center
For the last few years, and during heavy rain, Artesia's Albert O. Little Community Center often had leaks.
.
More recently, the water damage was so bad that city officials began to worry about its structural integrity.
.
By working with the City's insurance carrier, CJPIA, the City is proud to say that the Community Center roof replacement project has been completed.
Historic Society plans 7th annual Gala
Members of the Artesia Historical Society are deeply involved in planning their annual fall fundraiser.
This year's event, "Harvest Moon Halloween Party" will be held on Saturday, October 30 in the Albert O. Little Community Center at Artesia Park.
Guests will be encouraged to arrive in their favorite costumes (though optional for those conservative folks) and join the fun. Costume prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories
.
This year's event will include Corporate and Group Sponsorship opportunities and discounts for the purchase of a full table for eight guests. Tables for eight can be purchased for $700, a $100 saving from prior years, so get your party together early and reserve a table!

Filmed in Artesia
"The New Bicycle" is a short film about Jimmy, who has ridiculously outgrown his bicycle.
The film is written by Arshdeep Jawandha, who said he had a wonderful time in Artesia.
"The crew loved it since they were treated to a bonanza of Indian food and an exotic feel for the shotting days," said Jawandha.
The film will be shown in various film festivals.

L.A. County responds to heat wave with "cooling centers"
The list of L. A. County Cooling Centers is attached to these hot weather safety precautions. A link to a list of cooling centers is at the bottom of this post.
If you are planning to visit one of these Cooling Centers, it is advisable that you call in advance to make sure there is still seating available. If a Cooling Center is not operational, check the attached list for another Cooling Center nearest you or call “211”. Check with your local library when looking for a place to cool down. They have great resources and plenty to read while you escape the heat. For further information on Heat Waves go to http://lacoa.org/PDF/ESP10/Jul10.pdf
If you plan to be outdoors, please take precautions to protect yourself from the sun and heat.
-
Put on plenty of sun block and wear a wide brimmed hat or carry an umbrella.
-
Wear light, loose-fitting clothing.
-
Drink water often, don’t wait until you are thirsty.
-
Avoid unnecessary exertion.
-
If you experience dizziness, fatigue, faintness, headaches, muscle cramps and increased thirst you need to relax in a cooler, shaded place and drink water or a sports drink.
-
More severe symptoms (such as disorientation, pale and clammy skin, a rapid and weak pulse, and/or fast and shallow breathing) may indicate heat exhaustion or impending heat stroke. Seek immediate medical attention.
-
NEVER leave a senior, child or pet in a closed car or any vehicle since temperatures can quickly rise to life-threatening levels.
-
If you know seniors who live alone or people who’s immune and/or respiratory systems are not working properly, check on them regularly to make sure they are staying cool.
-
Offer assistance to “shut-ins” in your neighborhood. Check on them frequently during hot weather.

Coalition seeks to protect local government from state raids
A coalition calling itself Californians to Protect Local Taxpayers and Vital Services is currently collecting signatures to qualify the Local Taxpayer, Public Safety and Transportation Protection act for California’s November 2010 statewide ballot.
If passed, proponents say this constitutional amendment would prevent the state from diverting, borrowing or taking funds that are currently dedicated to local governments. The measure would also prevent the state from diverting gas tax revenues that voters have dedicated to transportation and transit improvements and services.
